Coordinating where everyone sleeps? Not so much. Whether you’re planning a bachelorette trip for eight, a family reunion for 20 or a friends’ trip for five, booking accommodations for a group is a lot more complicated than planning a trip for one or two people. Competing budgets, different sleep schedules, shared versus private space and the challenge of getting everyone to agree on anything can kill the vibe fast. Here's how to think through it before the group chat becomes a battleground. ## The first decision: hotel block vs. shared house This is the foundational choice, and it's worth making explicitly rather than defaulting to one or the other. - **Hotel block:** Everyone gets their own room with a private bathroom. Privacy is guaranteed. Housekeeping and on-site amenities are available. But there's no shared living space, meals together require going out and per-person costs are usually higher. - **Vacation rental (house or villa):** Shared living spaces make it easier to spend time together. Kitchen access reduces food costs. Per-person cost is often lower. Here are a few strategies for balancing different budgets and preferences. - **For hotels:** Book a room block at one property, but let people choose their room type. Standard rooms, superior rooms and suites at the same hotel still give everyone the same communal experience around the pool or at dinner. - **For houses:** Price by room, not by head count. Assign rooms by size and amenity (en-suite bathroom, private balcony, etc.) and let people self-select based on what they want to spend.
