# Open-Jaw Flights

## Flying into one city and home from another — and why you should

### TL;DR

An open-jaw flight lets you fly into one city and home from a completely different one — leaving the journey between them up to you. It’s perfect for road trips, multi-city adventures, and any trip where flying back to your starting point is just … going backwards. Most booking platforms support it. They just make it oddly hard to find.

* * *

Picture this. You're planning a road trip through southern Italy — Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Matera, maybe Rome at the end. You've got the route nailed. One problem: Every flight search keeps telling you to fly back to Naples when you're done.

You don't want to go back to Naples. You want to fly home from Rome. And you absolutely can. It's called an open-jaw flight, and once you know it exists, it changes the way you plan trips.

Open-jaw flights are one of travel's best-kept secrets — not because airlines hide it, but because most search tools aren't built for trips that don't fit neatly into a search box.

Here's everything you need to know.

## What’s an open-jaw flight?

A standard round-trip works like this: A → B, then B → A. You fly out, you fly back to where you started. Simple — and sometimes not right for the trip you're actually planning.

An open-jaw ticket breaks that loop. You fly A → B, then C → A. The stretch from B to C is yours to handle however you like. Rental car, train, ferry, bus — choose your own adventure.

Think of it like this: The flight gets you there and gets you home. Everything in between is yours.

It's bookable as a single ticket on most major platforms — not necessarily two separate one-ways (though sometimes that's cheaper — more on that in a moment). Airlines have sold these for decades. Most travelers just haven’t heard the term.

## The two types of open-jaw flights

**Single open-jaw:** e.g., New York → Naples, Rome → New York. You arrive in one city (Naples) and depart from another (Rome), with the same home airport on both ends. The most common setup.

**Double open-jaw:** e.g., New York → Naples, Rome → Chicago. Both the origin and destination cities are different (New York ≠ Chicago and Naples ≠ Rome). Less common but absolutely bookable.

## Does open-jaw actually save money?

Sometimes. Sometimes it's price-neutral. Sometimes it costs a bit more.

The real savings usually aren’t in the ticket price — they’re in everything else. The night you don't need. The gas you don't burn retracing your route. The extra day you get back. That's where open-jaw really pays off.

## When open-jaw makes the most sense

- **You're doing a road trip anyway.** If you're renting a car and driving across a region, returning to your arrival airport adds time, cost and zero value to your trip. Open-jaw removes all of that.

- **Both cities are well-connected.** Flying into Naples and out of Rome, for example — airlines compete on both legs, so pricing stays competitive.

- **Your trip has a natural direction.** When your trip flows from point A to point B, your flight should too.

## When a round-trip usually makes more sense

- **Your destination is a smaller city with limited flights.** Regional airports can carry a premium on either leg that wipes out your savings."

- **You're booking close to the date.** Round-trip availability holds up better last-minute — open-jaw combinations can thin out.

- **The overland leg between cities is expensive or a long haul.** If getting from B to C costs $150 and a full day, factor that in before you commit.

**Your trip type**

**Open-jaw advantage**

**What we recommend**

Road trip — different start and end cities

Saves backtracking, usually price-neutral

Do it

Multi-city tour across 3+ destinations

Logical routing, often similar price to round-trip

Compare it

Short city break, one destination

No overland leg — potential price premium

Round-trip usually better

Long-haul with a regional final leg

Skips a domestic connection on the way home

Worth checking

Budget airline routes, regional airports

Limited onward options, fees can add up

Compare both first

## What about two separate one-ways?

On some routes — especially those involving budget carriers — two separate one-way tickets come out cheaper than a connected open-jaw. Always worth checking.

The tradeoff: if your outbound is delayed and you miss your separately booked return, the second airline has zero obligation to rebook you. Manageable with a solid buffer between legs. Stressful without one.

##

How to book an open-jaw flight

Standard flight search is built for simple trips. Open-jaw isn't a simple trip — it's a real-world travel plan with moving parts. The tools you use to book it matter.

Open-jaw trips are exactly the kind of travel Mindtrip handles well.

Instead of wrestling with multi-city dropdowns and trying to remember which search mode handles open-jaw, just describe your trip in the chat. We'll figure out the routing, weigh the tradeoffs, and show you options that actually make sense.

**Try asking something like this:**

“I want to fly into Naples, Italy and fly home from Rome two weeks later. Leaving from JFK around May 20. Two adults. Show me the cheapest options under $1,200 per person.”

No dropdowns. No mode-switching. Just tell us your plan and we’ll help you figure it out.

Mindtrip can also handle the trip planning that comes after the flight — where to stay along the Amalfi Coast, what to do in Matera, the best restaurants in Rome. One place for all of it.

## Five trips built for open-jaw flights

These routes come from the way real travelers describe their plans. Each one has a natural open-jaw shape — a logical place to land, a journey worth taking, and a logical city to fly home from. Price ranges given are for economy tickets during the low-season.

### Italy: Into Naples, home from Rome

A classic. Fly into Naples, spend a day in the city, drive the Amalfi Coast south, cut east to Matera and Puglia, drift north through Rome. Or push further and fly home from Florence or Venice.

**Why it works:** that overland route covers 300 to 500 miles depending on where you meander. Driving back to Naples from Rome tacks on four to five hours and the frustrating feeling of going in reverse. Open-jaw removes both.

**Rough cost guide:** New York to Naples from $450 to $750; Rome to New York from $400 to $700. Price ranges are typical for travel early November through early December, and mid-January through mid-March. Open-jaw total is often comparable to a simple round-trip.

### Japan: Into Tokyo, home from Osaka

Japan's natural traveler route runs in one direction: Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka, with optional side trips to Hiroshima or Nara. Flying into Tokyo and home from Osaka follows that arc perfectly. No backtracking. No wasted bullet train fare.

**Why it works:** A Shinkansen from Osaka back to Tokyo, just to catch your original return flight, will cost you around $130 each way — and half a day. Open-jaw saves both.

**Rough cost guide:** Los Angeles to Tokyo from $450 to $750; Osaka to Los Angeles from $450 to $800. Price ranges are typical for travel late October through early December, and mid-January through early March. Open-jaw is often price-neutral or slightly cheaper than round-trip via Tokyo.

### Croatia: Into Dubrovnik, home from Zagreb

Dubrovnik is at Croatia's southern tip — gorgeous, but a long way from everything north. The natural route goes up the coast: Split, Plitvice Lakes, Zagreb. Flying home from Zagreb rather than driving back south saves a full day.

**Why it works:** the Dubrovnik–Zagreb drive takes around 10 hours. You'd be making it anyway — there's no reason to reverse it at the end.

**Rough cost guide:** Chicago to Dubrovnik from $550 to $900; Zagreb to Chicago from $500 to $850. Price ranges are typical for travel late October through November, and mid-January through early March. Open-jaw often comes in cheaper than round-tripping to either city.

### Scotland: Into Edinburgh, home from Inverness

The Highlands route starts in Edinburgh and heads north — Stirling, Glencoe, Fort William, the North Coast 500 — ending naturally in Inverness. Flying home from there instead of driving back to Edinburgh saves three hours each way.

**Why it works:** the trip has a direction. Inverness is the logical endpoint. There are direct flights from Inverness to London and connecting options home. The open-jaw just follows the map.

**Rough cost guide:** Boston to Edinburgh from $300 to $650; Inverness to Boston (via London) from $400 to $750. Price ranges are typical for travel late October through early December, and mid-January through early March. The Inverness leg sometimes carries a small premium, but the time and lodging you save usually more than offset it.

### New Zealand: Into Auckland, home from Queenstown

New Zealand is practically designed for open-jaw travel. The trip naturally arcs from Auckland south through Wellington, crosses to the South Island, and ends in Queenstown. Flying back to Auckland from there is time and money you don't need to spend.

**Why it works:** Auckland to Queenstown is a two-hour domestic flight — or a long 9-hour drive. An open-jaw removes both. That's a full extra day in Fiordland or Wanaka instead.

**Rough cost guide:** Los Angeles to Auckland from $550 to $950; Queenstown to Los Angeles from $650 to $1,100. Price ranges are typical for travel May through mid-June, and late August through September. Open-jaw flights are comparable to round-trip via Auckland once domestic leg costs are factored in.

## Open-jaw + rental car

Most open-jaw road trips mean picking up a rental car at your arrival airport and dropping it at a different location when you're done. That's called a one-way rental, and it’s worth understanding the fees before you book the flight.

### What drop fees look like

- **Within the same country:** typically $50–150 for shorter distances, up to $200–$400 for long drops — like Edinburgh pickup to Inverness drop.

- **Cross-border drops:** usually require specific authorization and can run $300–$600+. Always confirm before booking anything.

- **Some routes have no drop fee** — particularly corridors where rental companies need cars repositioned. Naples to Rome is a well-known one. Always worth asking.

### The easiest way to compare

[AutoEurope](https://book.autoeurope.com/en-us) and [RentalCars.com](https://www.rentalcars.com/) let you filter by one-way availability and compare drop fees across providers in one search. Much faster than going company by company — and the differences can be surprisingly large for the exact same route.

### When it might be worth returning the car

If the one-way drop fee is more than a train or bus between your endpoint and your arrival airport, returning the car and using public transit for the last leg can come out cheaper.

This works well in countries with solid rail networks. Less so in places where the car is the only practical option — rural Ireland, the Scottish Highlands, most of New Zealand.

## Open-jaw flight FAQs

### Is an open-jaw flight cheaper than a round-trip?

Not always — but it's usually price-neutral, especially when both cities you're flying in and out of have solid flight competition. The real value tends to be in what you save on the ground: the drive you skip, the night you don't need, the day you get back.

### Can I book open-jaw on budget airlines?

Most budget carriers like Frontier and Ryanair don't sell connected open-jaw tickets, so you'd book two separate one-ways instead. See the "What about two separate one-ways?" section above for how to handle that safely.

### Does it affect my baggage allowance?

Not when you book it as a connected ticket — your baggage allowance applies to the whole itinerary. If you're booking two separate one-ways, each has its own allowance (and potentially its own baggage fee). Check both before you fly.

### Can the two legs be on different airlines?

Yes — multi-city searches will sometimes mix carriers to find the best combination. Just know that a delay on Leg 1 doesn't obligate Leg 2's airline to rebook you. Many travelers stick to the same carrier or alliance for open-jaw bookings to keep those protections in place.

### What about flying into one country and home from another?

Absolutely doable. Fly into Paris, home from Rome — that's an international open-jaw and it books the same way. Just make sure you have the right entry documents for any borders you'll cross between landing and departing.

### Do both legs have to be booked together?

No — but a connected open-jaw ticket gives you better protections if something goes wrong. If one leg is meaningfully cheaper booked separately, weigh that saving against what you give up. For most trips, especially long-haul, the connected ticket is worth the small premium.
