The listing says "steps from the beach." The photos are all turquoise water and white sand. The price is higher than everything else nearby, but you figure the premium is worth it for easy beach access every morning. Then you arrive and discover that "steps from the beach" means a 15-minute walk down a steep hill, across a busy road, and through a private resort property where you're technically not supposed to be. The gap between hotel marketing and reality is nowhere wider than when it comes to beach access. Here's how to close that gap before you book. ## The 5 tiers of beach access — and what they actually mean Hotels use a spectrum of language to describe their relationship to the beach, and almost none of it is standardized. From best to most misleading: 1. **Beachfront:** The hotel sits directly on the beach. You walk out a door and your feet hit the sand. This is the real thing — and it usually commands a premium. 2. **Beach access:** The hotel has a dedicated path or walkway to the beach, often with reserved chairs. Still good, but you're not on the sand. 3. **Steps from the beach:** Meaningless. "Steps" is not a unit of measurement. Could be two minutes. Could be 12. 4. **Near the beach:** The hotel is somewhere nearby. That might mean a 20-minute walk or even a short drive. 5. **Beach views:** The hotel has rooms that face the water. You may not be able to access that water at all from the property. ### Why this matters more than you think Beach access isn’t just about getting to the sand. It shapes what you pay, how you spend your day and, ultimately, how much you enjoy your stay. Here’s why: - A hotel that’s a 10-minute walk from the beach shouldn’t automatically command beachfront prices. - If you have small children, a 10-minute walk with towels, toys, snacks and a stroller is not the same as a 10-minute walk alone. - If you want to pop out for a morning swim before breakfast, distance matters. - Beach access might mean a private beach with reserved chairs — or a public beach where you’re carrying everything yourself. Very different experiences. ## How to verify beach access before you book Hotel listings don’t always tell the full story.
