Visit Truckee-Tahoe Boosts Economic Impact Through the Power of AI

    The Opportunity

Visit Truckee-Tahoe had already brought AI trip planning to their website. The next step was to rethink how they converted traveler interest into actual visitation.

The goal: Turn "I want to go there" into "I'm going" — driving real economic impact.

That led to a simple but important question:

What if the ad didn’t click to a static page, but into a conversation?

Visit Truckee-Tahoe set out to test whether a more immediate planning experience could move travelers from inspiration to action faster than a traditional landing page.

    Key focus areas included:
    • Evaluating how conversational AI could improve conversion compared to a traditional website experience
    • Activating their owned audience with more actionable planning tools
    • Improving conversion from inspiration to itinerary creation
    • Increasing actual destination visitation from paid media campaigns

    The Strategy

Visit Truckee-Tahoe split their paid social traffic during their fall 2025 campaign to test this approach.

Half of the traffic went to their standard landing page. Half clicked directly into the Mindtrip experience, where travelers could start planning immediately.

Rather than navigating pages and piecing together a trip on their own, travelers could explore options tailored to their preferences and translate inspiration into a structured trip right in the moment of discovery.

The shift from passive browsing to active planning was immediate. The results followed.

    The Impact

    Media
Travelers who entered the AI planning experience converted at 21.2%, compared to 14% on the traditional landing page.

But the real headline? A 51% increase in actual destination visitation, as measured by Tourism Economics. Not just clicks or engagement. Real people showing up.

Within a few months, the results were clear. The AI experience became their new standard.

What stood out was the measurable increase in actual visitation. By helping travelers plan in the moment of discovery, we were able to influence real decisions and drive meaningful economic impact for the destination.

Building on the success of their fall campaign, Visit Truckee-Tahoe carried this approach into their spring 2026 campaign — no longer testing, but fully leaning into AI-powered trip planning as the primary entry point.

In parallel, they extended it across owned channels like email, guiding travelers directly into interactive planning experiences rather than static pages.
Itinerary creation increased from roughly 36 per month to 2,600 per month year-over-year.

What started as a campaign test evolved into a new model for how Visit Truckee-Tahoe drives visitation — one centered on helping travelers move from inspiration to planning and from planning to arrival.

    What This Means

Visit Truckee-Tahoe’s results point to something bigger than a successful campaign test.

Destination marketing has always excelled at inspiring travelers. AI now makes it possible to go a step further — turning that inspiration into planning, and planning into real visitation.

When the moment of inspiration and the moment of planning happen in the same place, travelers don’t just engage; they decide. And when they decide, they show up.

For DMOs looking to demonstrate measurable economic impact from their marketing investment, the question is no longer whether AI-powered trip planning works. Visit Truckee-Tahoe answered that. The question is how quickly you can make it part of your strategy.
